Why Sikhs are not Hindus – Simplified version

By  |

Sikhism is an independent, simple and straightforward religion. It does not have roots in any other religion or ideology. Sikhism does have its origin in the Indian subcontinent but the Sikhs are not Hindus.

Sikhism differs from Hinduism in 8 unique ways:

1. Hindus worship Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Krishna, Kali, Durga, Ganesh and others Lakhs Devi Devtas.

Sikhism instructs to believe in One Almighty God (Ek Onkar-One God in all of creations).

I am neither a Hindu, nor am I a Muslim.
My body and breath of life belong to the Great Almighty (Allah-Raam). ||4||

2. Hindus perform idol worship.

Sikhism instructs not to perform idol worship.  Guru Nanak Dev Ji instructs that idol worship will not lead one to salvation.

I do not perform Hindu worship services, nor do I offer the Muslim prayers.
I have taken the One Formless Lord into my heart; I humbly worship Him there. ||3||

3. Hindus tenets including belief in caste system. People are ranked according to the caste system and considered superior or inferior.

Sikhism instructs to respect all human as equal regardless of caste, color, gender or race.

4. Hindus believes in Fast. They believe fasting will purify blood and soul.

Sikhism instructs that making your body suffer will not help you to meet God, meditation of God is above all.

6. Hindus consider their religion as superior of all.

Sikhism instructs to focus of meditation on God instead of glorifying a religion.

7. Hindus make Pilgrimages, in order to get close to God and it will washed away all your sins.

Sikhism instructs every human has God inside, search it within your soul. Also taking bath at pilgrimages does not wash sins.

8. Hindus purpose of life is Dharma (Fulfilling one purpose), Artha (prosperity), Kama (desire, sexual, enjoyment), and Moksha (Enlightenment ).

Sikhism instructs that the purpose of life is to become one with God, to merge in the One whom we originated from.

Finally , Sikhism Instructs,

Ram, Rahim, Puran, Quaran tell a lot but I don’t even bother for them

Simritis, Shastras, Vedas, explain different things but I do not consider them of any worth

O Almighty! by Your Grace I have learnt it all from Your Word

    A very 2 dimensional article.

Hinduism has changed so much over the last 1500 years that it doesn’t resemble anything that it was before. This is also happening to Sikhi, and we must stop it.

The true Vedic Dharm wasn’t very different from Sikhi It advocated the oneness and formlessness of God, it didn’t speak of caste or other inequities like discrimination on the grounds of gender. The Vedas clearly say that there is one supreme Parbhram, who is formless and omnipresent.

The true Vedic Dharm was very similar to Sikhi, dont forget that Guru Nanak was well versed in the Vedas, that is not to say that Sikhi is based solely on Vedic Dharm or Buddhism – not at all, Sikhi has its own concept and path to attaining salvation through Ghrest Jeevan – life of a householder. But to say it has no links with Vedic or Budh Dharm is also wrong.

The concept of Ik Oankar is derived form the Vedic Omkar – Ek am Satyam and is mentioned in Buddhist scripture as well.

Lets see what Sri Guru Granth Sahib says about the Vedas:

    ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
Guramukh Naadhan Guramukh Vaedhan Guramukh Rehiaa Samaaee ||
The Guru’s Word is the Sound-current of the Naad; the Guru’s Word is the Wisdom of the Vedas; the Guru’s Word is all-pervading.
    Ang 2

    ਵੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
    Vaedh Pukaarai Thribidhh Maaeiaa ||
The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities.
Ang 28 – As per Sikhi – Rajo, Satho and Tamo

Baedh Puraan Parrae Ko Eih Gun Simarae Har Ko Naamaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
This is the blessing of studying the Vedas and the Puraanas, that you may meditate on the Name of the Lord.
    Ang 220

    ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸੁਧਾਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਰ ॥
    Baedh Puraan Sinmrith Sudhhaakhyar ||
The Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, the purest of utterances,
    Ang 262

    18. Ang 263 Line 16 Raag Gauri Sukhmanee: Guru Arjan Dev
    or Go to Shabad

Har Simaran Lag Baedh Oupaaeae ||
Remembering the Lord, the Vedas were composed.
    Ang 291

Baedh Puraan Sinmrith Mehi Dhaekh ||
See Him in the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees.
    Ang 294

Pathith Oudhhaaran Paarabreham Santh Baedh Kehandhaa ||
The Saints and the Vedas proclaim, that the Supreme Lord God is the Saving Grace of sinners.
    Ang 319

Baedh Puraan Simrith Kae Math Sun Nimakh N Heeeae Basaavai ||
He listens to the teachings of the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, but he does not enshrine them in his heart, even for an instant.
Ang 632 – One of the many indications that man moved away from the Vedas and their wisdom was all but lost.

Baedh Paath Math Paapaa Khaae ||
Reading the Vedas, sinful intellect is destroyed.
    Ang 791

Har Nigam Lehehi N Bhaev ||
The Vedas do not know the Mystery of the Lord.
Ang 837 – Not to be confused with mere criticism, simply that the Vedas couldn’t uncover the mystery of the Lord.

Chathur Baedh Pooran Har Naae ||
The four Vedas are completely contained within the Lord’s Name.
    Ang 888

There are many other pankthees (lines) like these. The Vedas are mentioned far more then any other scriptures in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, although it is clearly mentioned in many places that they have not been able to know the secrets of Parbhram, however Gurbani recognizes that the Vedas came from Akaal purukh.

Absolutely AGREE, the vedic people had long hair. the 3 gun which Guru sahib talked about were discovered by rishi kapil. It is just that the rishi of the Satyug was also made a Sipahi. rest all the concepts are similar to Vedic dharma. The Shiva, Bhramha and Vishu were given respect by Hindus and even Guru granth sahib considers them as revered in the shabad – PAATI TOREH MALINI… TEEN DEV PRATAKH TOREH KAREH KIS KI SEO( ANG 479)

Religion has two big aspects 1 Rituals and practices 2 Realisation ie way to God. Almost all religions appears to separate in the first aspect but are same in the second aspect ie self realisation. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji has persuaded us to follow humility and abandon proud which is the only way to achieve God. Na Hum Hindu signifies that if Hum ( Proud) is present one is neither a Hindu nor a Musalman this body(pind) and life(pran) in it both belong to God ie to Ram and Allah.
