Who is Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa and why he is on Hunger Strike?

Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa is a Sikh Human Rights worker who is demanding the permanent release of Sikh Prisoners who were lodged in Jail even after completing the minimum mandatory terms of their life imprisonments.

Last year, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa started his hunger strike on 14th Nov 2013 at Gurudwara Amb Sahib Mohali, Punjab to request for the release of 6 Sikhs from Indian prisons who had served their sentence term but had not been released. On 24th Dec 2013 Akal Takhat issued an edict to Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa to end his fast and promise him the release of prisoners. On 27th Dec 2013 Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa ends hunger strike at Akal Takhat since he didn’t want to go against the directives of Akal Takhat Sahib.

After exactly one year, on 14th Nov 2014, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa again announced the hunger strike for Sikh Prisoners. He informed the reason to resume his protest was the failure of Akal Takht Giani Gurbachan Singh to keep his promise. He began a fast unto death, which would be terminated prematurely only if the government would begin to obey its own laws.

In one of the statement he state that:

“My mission is only to seek the release of imprisoned Singhs, I have no association with anyone besides Guru Granth Sahib and Guru’s sangat,” said Bhai Gurbaksh Singh.

Currently, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh ji has undertaken an indefinite hunger and completes the 45th day of Fast as on 28th Dec 2014; He further stated that if “Bandi Singhs” were not released before 2nd Jan 2015 then he will stop drinking water as well. He lost 18kg of weight already and as per doctors beyond 45th day of hunger strike can cause death due to cardiovascular collapse or severe infection. I pray to Waheguru Ji to bless him all the strength and he remains in Chardikala.

Does his campaigning is Peaceful or Bustling?

Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa approach to seek the release of Sikh prisoners is completely peaceful and non violent. There are many Sikhs (probably in thousands) who are suffering throughout jails in India, and some of them have already completed their sentence term. However, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh is only soliciting the release of those Sikhs who have completed their court sentences. Five Singhs; Bhai Lal Singh Akaalgarh (Nabha Jail), Bhai Shamsher Singh, Bhai Lakhwinder Singh, Bhai Gurmeet Singh (all in Bural Jail), and Bhai Gurdeep Singh Khaira (Karnatka Jail) along with 11 more Singhs remain behind bars even though they have completed their sentences pronounced by the courts.

Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa is on hunger strike at Gurudwara Laknaur Sahib, Ambala, Haryana in a peaceful manner. However, it has been proven time and time again that those engaging in non-violent resistance to seek justice will be consistently ignored. Bhai Gurbaksh Singh’s case is yet further evidence of this.

Peace is a worthy end, to be sure, but justice is the means, and justice is not always achieved peacefully. When we sing “give peace a chance” we’re skipping an important step: the how. When we wring our hands and cluck our tongues at violent protests, we are denying history.

Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara said it best in his open letter:

Are the government and mainstream media not endorsing the belief that the only way to send a message through to the deaf ears of the state is through armed struggle? It is undeniable that if instead of a hunger strike Bhai Gurbaksh Singh had set off an explosion, the government, the media, and other Brahmanical forces would have been crying themselves hoarse until now. Now, when one Singh of the Guru has remained hungry for the past two weeks to have his just demands heard what message is the conspiratorial silence of these institutions sending?

This intentional silence, this state-sponsored message should be clearly understood that “We don’t care about non-violent protest and hunger strikes, we only hear the sound of bullets and explosions.”

Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa is supported by Sikhs people nationally and Internationally.  Sikh Groups from India, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Malaysia and United States are supporting Bhai Ji’s Campaign.

Why Akal Takht and SGPC are not raising their voice against such injustice?

The Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Akal Takhat Jathedars have not shown much support for Bhai Gurbaksh Singh, despite numerous appeals by him and others. It was the duty of the Akal Takht Jathedars to raise the voice and unite all Sikhs for such an injustice. But it’s a hard truth that Akal Takht couldn’t keep their promises, otherwise the “Bandi Singhs” would be walking free by now and there would be no need for protest by Gurbaksh singh ji.

I request the Akal Takht Jathedars to take the lead in fighting for justice for our Sikhs brothers who are imprisoned and to see that they are released as soon as possible. Act now or it’s too late.

Why Punjab Government is not executing any action against such Injustice to Sikhs?

Government of Punjab should be criticized for their failure to address the release of Sikh political prisoners. Even they are not releasing the four prisoners who are confined in Punjab Jails.

Bhai Gurbaksh singh khalsa has now entered the 45th day of fast but the government has not taken any notice or action so far. It seems that politics is being played here; Government is acting as a mute spectator “in one ear and out the other”.

Bhai Gurbaksh singh said the struggle was receiving great response from Sikhs around the world but the government’s rude attitude in this regard has disappointed all. He said if such an attitude continues, dire consequences would be surfaced for which the government would be responsible.

All Panthic jathebandis must unite and come up with a course of action to secure the release of those Singhs who have already completed their sentences. Rallies and protest marches should be organized everywhere so that this deaf government can hear our voice and it can be carried around the world.

Why media is not covering Gurbaksh singh hunger strike?

It’s very strange that the Indian media are not providing any kind of coverage to Bhai Gurbaksh Singh’s hunger strike. Logically, Indian media is keen in getting any kind of news, are not willing to highlight the hunger strike; not even the Punjabi news channels of Punjab. Why? Are they forced to not cover the hunger strike? Or they are paid by government? Well this has given clear indication of what we should expect from Media and Government. Being a 5th largest religion in the world we have to fight hard to get the justice and this justice is on hold from many years (remember 1984 riots).

A majority of coverage has been provided by Panthic media operated by Sikhs who are providing a number of interviews and regular updates on Bhai Sahib’s campaign.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Sikh Siyasat, Sikh24, Ipunjabin, dailysikhupdates, Punjab spectrum and all those Sikhs who are standing with Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa. These people are doing the great work for our Sikh Panth by covering the hunger strike, creating awareness, motivating the people to join the campaign and raising the voice of injustice.

What will happen if Gurbaksh Sikh sacrifices his life? Who will be Responsible? Will there be a revolution?

Gurbaksh Singh Ji on a hunger strike unto death and I pray for the Chardikala of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh ji. Indian newspapers refuse to publish what is happening and his sacrifice is virtually unknown outside of the Sikh Community. He mustn’t be allowed to die unnoticed by the world. Time is running very fast and Bhai sahib’s health is deteriorating very fast. Please support and spread this campaign through Facebook Posts, Videos, Songs, Poems, Marches, Peaceful Protests and Events.

It’s a fight with the Death…and we won’t let Bhai Sahib loose…lets Act now.

It’s a Do or Die situation for Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa and his supporters, his health is deteriorating day by day and with no water in this condition may lead to some worst thing. Please do your best to awake the sleeping Governments and Media otherwise Bhai sahib shaheedi is imminent.

Let’s ask a question to our self. Who will be responsible if Gurbaksh Singh Ji sacrifice his life for Justice?

Should we blame Government to ignore the campaign. Akal Takht to not raise the voice for such Injustice, Media to not publish coverage and create awareness Or WE (Sikhs), to sit at home and busy in our life.

There are times when it’s necessary to fight against things that have become so wrong that they should no longer be. Things that were once small those have become big, but are no less wrong, must be made small again; a revolution, or a complete circle, is needed. A revolution is a significant change that usually occurs in a short period of time. Revolutions have happened throughout human history and the results include major changes in culture and socio-political institutions. And this revolution will create another history in mankind.
